Personal Statement

My personal philosophy as a journalist is that seeking objective truth defeats the purpose of journalism as a whole. As writers with different experiences and insights, our duties are to express our individual truths to the majority to seek those who will listen. The idea of an objective truth ignores the influence journalism has on society, with the power to change mindsets, set new norms, and open people to different ideas. This is also why my general area of expertise lies in discussing different types of media and their portrayal of universal themes regarding human nature. From film to television to literature, none of these forms of art tries to restrict itself by seeking some sort of objective truth. Instead, it focuses on expressing different ideals by which people can interpret whatever they wish. People tend to reveal a lot about themselves by how they respond to what kinds of media are exposed to them. So it stands to reason that the more they are exposed to, the better understanding they have of the world. I write as a journalist in order to spark discussion and encourage communication. I share my own personal insights so that others are inspired to discover their own and continue the cycle of spreading awareness. The only objective truth that exists is that in order to see the bigger picture, we must first open ourselves to the truths of others.
